As you have probably noticed the IPCC - a panel introduced by WMO and UNEP - has published their latest report last month called "Climate Change 2007".  Check their site for more information. For those in the Netherlands: the study is also referred to by the NOS|Journaal file on climate change.

The other day I sat down with Rob Creemers - a dutch trendwatcher - talking about various IT-related trends. During that discussion he mentioned the book Hell and High Water (Joe Romm). A review of that book, together with an interesting discussion at the bottom, can be found here. "Environmental extremist" or not, his thougths are worthwhile reading. The text below is a reaction on a discussion at Nederland in Europa (the Netherlands in Europe). It is published here because the space to place a reaction was limited to 600 characters.

Gesteld wordt "Om ook in de toekomst het welzijn te waarborgen voor een groeiende wereldbevolking moet de economie namelijk blijven groeien". Ook wordt gesteld "Daarvoor is energie nodig".

Vanuit deze stelling wordt vervolgens verder geredeneerd.

Vreemd... Wat bedoelen we met "welzijn"? Wat bedoelen we met "economie"? Wat is de relatie tussen "Welzijn" en "economie"? Is voor "economische groei" wel (meer) energie nodig?

Waar het om gaat is kwaliteit van leven: dat van jou en dat van onze naasten. Wat dat betekent is voor iedereen anders met een aantal gemeenschappelijke kenmerken.

Willen we de komende jaren blijven leven met focus op financiëel rendement? ZONDER de indirecte kosten van onze activiteiten in ogenschouw te nemen? ZONDER verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor hetgeen we hebben veroorzaakt en zullen veroorzaken? By the way, 'Milieuvervuiling' is slechts één van deze consequenties. Sociale isolatie van ouderen bijvoorbeeld is een ander (en jij bent straks ook een oudere in de maatschappij...). En zo weet je zelf ook nog wel een aantal consequenties...

Waarborging van kwaliteit van leven begint met het bepalen WAT die kwaliteit is die we met z’n allen willen en het KIEZEN van de spelregels die daarvoor nodig zijn. Die spelregels omvatten meer dan 'blijf economisch groeien'.

Natuurlijk zullen we het onderwerp Milieuvervuiling MOETEN aanpakken. Maar pak het wel aan binnen de juiste context: link het niet aan economische groei, maar link het aan 'VERANTWOORD ONDERNEMEN'.

ACTIE I: Werk, in samenwerking met sociale partners en in termen van groeiend welzijn, uit wat we met verantwoord ondernemen nu en de komende generaties willen bereiken en wat daarvoor nodig is.

ACTIE II: Pak de milieuvervuiling op diverse fronten (dus meer dan energie alleen) internationaal en in samenwerking met het bedrijfsleven aan. Leg de lat voor Nederland hoog en wees een voorbeeld voor toekomstige generaties.

ACTIE III: Wacht niet op geld wat vrij moet komen uit de EU. Investeer (gezamenlijk: overheid en bedrijfsleven) in de nodige research en pak de daaruit voortkomende kansen. Wacht niet op regels die uit de EU moeten komen. Pak de voortrekkersrol binnen Europa.

PS: Ligt hier een kans voor Nederland om wereldwijd te laten zien hoe groei van welvaart en welzijn verantwoord hand in hand kunnen gaan bij een groeiende wereldbevolking en dreigende effecten van milieuvervuiling?

The steering group AHN (Actual Heights Netherlands) provide a detailed elevation model of the whole of Netherlands using Airborne Laser Altimetry. From this data various products are derived.

One of them being a service telling you how high above sealevel (NAP) you live, based on the dutch zip code (postcode). If you're interested: check this service.

As you know, I was trying to find some information on the effects for the Netherlands. But then you also want to know what the effects would be in other parts of the world. Whilst researching I found a model and simulation tool I'd like to share with you.

Weiss and Overpeck from the University of Arizona (Department of Geosciences and Environmental Studies Laboratory) did some nice work on showing what the effects could be of sea levels rising. They present this work as a tool you can use on-line and in which you can set various parameters. The result being a map of a selected area showing those areas that might be overrun by water.

The university also provides research results on related subjects.

Might be worthwhile (if you're interested) to tune in to the Dutch TV (Nederland 2) on thursday the 2nd November. At 23:10 in the evening the documentary "Het verloren land"  (The lost land) Is shown. More information can be found at Hollanddoc.

A few shortcuts to resources on the web which I found whilst trying to find out the answer to this question after having seen the movie An Inconvenient Truth last week. Most of the referenced sites are in Dutch by the way.

CMO has a short article on the subject and a nice picture showing local effects for the Netherlands.

The site hoesnel.nl has a chapter on climate changes affecting the Netherlands. By the way ' hoesnel'  is actually two words: ' hoe snel'  and means ' How fast'. The site publishes some extrapolation studies (actually it refers to studies) on various subjects, including climatology.
